Purpose of the Role
The successful candidate will investigate death benefit claims on behalf of the trustees of the South African Retirement Annuity Fund (SARAF). The role focuses on identifying legal beneficiaries, investigating their circumstances, interpreting relevant legislation, and making fair recommendations for the distribution of death benefits under Section 37C of the Pension Funds Act.
The position requires strong analytical thinking, legal interpretation, report writing, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Main Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Investigate all death claims submitted to the South African Retirement Annuity Fund.
- Identify and trace legal dependants and nominated beneficiaries.
- Verify beneficiary information through interviews and supporting documentation.
- Assess financial dependency and personal circumstances.
- Make fair and legally compliant recommendations regarding the allocation of death benefits.
- Determine appropriate methods of payment for beneficiaries.
- Ensure every investigation complies with the Pension Funds Act and the Rules of the Fund.
- Interpret legislation and apply legal principles to individual cases.
- Maintain complete investigation records and audit trails.
- Prepare detailed investigation reports for trustees.
- Consult with Death Benefit Allocation Specialists on complex matters.
- Support the Death Claims Sub-committee with technical investigations.
- Perform additional administrative and operational duties when required.

Minimum Requirements
Applicants should possess:
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- At least two years’ practical experience working with Section 37C of the Pension Funds Act.
- Experience investigating dependants and nominees.
- Experience recommending death benefit allocations.
- Knowledge of retirement fund administration processes.
