Job Purpose

The Laundry Assistant is responsible for collecting, sorting, washing, drying, ironing, folding, storing, and distributing hospital linen. The role helps maintain a clean and hygienic healthcare environment while ensuring adequate linen supplies are available throughout the hospital.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect dirty linen from wards, theatres, and hospital departments.
  • Sort linen according to washing requirements.
  • Operate industrial washing, drying, and ironing equipment safely.
  • Fold and prepare clean linen for distribution.
  • Deliver clean linen to hospital units on schedule.
  • Monitor linen stock levels and report shortages.
  • Inspect linen for stains, tears, or damage.
  • Record daily linen weights and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the laundry and linen storage areas.
  • Wash and replace ward curtains when required.
  • Follow infection prevention and control procedures at all times.
  • Comply with occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Handle hospital linen carefully to prevent contamination.
  • Report faulty equipment or maintenance issues.
  • Support other laundry staff when required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Previous laundry or housekeeping experience is advantageous.
  • Healthcare laundry experience will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and hospital hygiene standards.
  • Basic record-keeping skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Physically fit and able to stand for long periods.
  • Able to lift and move bags of linen safely.
  • Willing to work shifts, weekends, night duty, and public holidays.
