Job Purpose

The Flight Operations Assistant supports the Operations Control Centre by preparing flight plans, monitoring flights, coordinating operational activities, assisting with irregular operations, maintaining communication between departments, and ensuring compliance with aviation regulations and company procedures.

The position requires excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to make informed decisions in a time-sensitive environment.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

Flight Planning

  • Preparing Operational Flight Plans for every scheduled FlySafair flight.
  • Distributing flight plans to relevant operational teams.
  • Filing ATS (Air Traffic Services) Flight Plans accurately and on time.
  • Supporting dispatch activities through:
    • Route selection
    • Alternate airport planning
    • Fuel calculations
    • Weather analysis
    • NOTAM assessments
    • MEL/CDL considerations
    • Operational limitations

Operational Monitoring

  • Continuously monitoring all aircraft and flights during each shift.
  • Tracking flight progress from departure to arrival.
  • Monitoring CTOT (Calculated Take-Off Time) requirements.
  • Coordinating Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) restrictions.
  • Maintaining situational awareness of aircraft locations and operational status.

Operations Coordination

  • Responding to OCC communication channels promptly.
  • Coordinating with flight crews, engineering teams, airport staff, dispatch personnel, and management.
  • Advising relevant stakeholders of delays and operational changes.
  • Assisting with additional scheduled flights, charter operations, maintenance flights, and training flights.
  • Supporting operational recovery during delays, diversions, cancellations, and other irregular operations.

Compliance

  • Following company operational procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with Civil Aviation Authority regulations.
  • Supporting aviation safety and security standards.
  • Maintaining accurate operational documentation.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or an equivalent qualification.
  • At least 2 years of experience in an aviation operations environment.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Flight planning
    • Flight dispatch procedures
    • Aviation operational regulations
    • Airline operational systems
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including:
    • Day shifts
    • Night shifts
    • Weekends
    • Public holidays

Advantageous Qualification

Candidates with the following will have an added advantage:

  • Restricted Radiotelephony Licence.
