About the Role

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is seeking a dedicated and self-motivated Driver 2: Heavy Motor Vehicle to provide transportation, logistical support, and general maintenance assistance at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town.

The successful candidate will be responsible for transporting staff, passengers, goods, and materials while supporting conservation and estate maintenance activities.

Minimum Requirements

Option 1

  • Grade 10 or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 2
  • Minimum 4 years relevant work experience

Option 2

  • Grade 12 or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 4
  • Minimum 3 years relevant work experience

Advantageous

  • Higher Education Qualification or equivalent at NQF Level 5

Essential Requirements

  • Heavy Motor Vehicle Driver’s Licence (Code C)
  • Valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP/PDP)
  • Ability to operate heavy vehicles safely
  • Willingness to work weekends, standby duties, and sleep-in shifts
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Transportation Services

  • Transport staff using a 60-seater bus
  • Transport passengers, goods, and materials
  • Collect materials and supplies
  • Operate vehicles both on and off SANBI premises

Vehicle Operations

  • Drive refuse removal trucks, tractors, buses, and other SANBI vehicles
  • Perform daily vehicle inspections
  • Check oil, water, fuel, and warning lights
  • Report defects and maintenance issues immediately
  • Ensure vehicles are properly maintained and garaged

Estate Maintenance Support

  • Assist with lawn mowing and brush cutting
  • Support mulch, compost, and wood chip production
  • Load and offload plant material and equipment
  • Assist with exhibitions, displays, and plant collection trips
  • Participate in wildfire fighting and emergency responses

Environmental Support

  • Collect and sort recyclable materials
  • Report pests and plant diseases
  • Support conservation and maintenance activities

Health and Safety

  • Comply with traffic regulations
  • Follow SANBI safety and security procedures
  • Ensure passenger safety at all times
