Job Purpose
The Port Worker is responsible for providing labour support as directed by supervisors to ensure efficient cargo operations, workplace safety, and operational excellence within the port terminal environment.
Key Responsibilities
Cargo Handling Operations
- Load, off-load, and secure cargo according to standard operating procedures.
- Perform hooking and unhooking activities during cargo movements.
- Assist with tarping and untarping cargo where required.
- Place and remove dunnage for cargo protection and handling.
Port Equipment Support
- Clean operational equipment, including ship-to-shore crane windows and cabins.
- Assist with the maintenance of clean and safe work areas.
- Identify appropriate cargo handling equipment and gear.
Container and Rail Operations
- Inspect container conditions and report defects.
- Conduct reefer monitoring operations.
- Open and close rail wagon twist-locks safely and efficiently.

Cleaning and Housekeeping
- Clean operational areas, rail trucks, workshops, offices, sheds, and ablution facilities.
- Maintain a clean working environment that meets health and safety standards.
Documentation and Reporting
- Complete required operational and accident reports.
- Record relevant operational information accurately and timeously.
Minimum Requirements
Educational Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric) or NQF Level 4 qualification
Experience
- Minimum of 1 year terminal operations experience
Knowledge Requirements
- Understanding of terminal layouts
- Knowledge of workplace safety procedures
- Familiarity with stack positions and cargo handling environments
