About the Role
Food Service Aids are responsible for assisting with food preparation, cooking, serving meals, maintaining cleanliness in food preparation areas, and ensuring that all meals are prepared according to hospital nutrition standards. The role directly contributes to patient recovery by supporting the delivery of balanced and hygienic meals.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must possess:
- Grade 10, Grade 11 or Grade 12 (Matric).
- Ability to read and write.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Physical fitness to lift heavy food containers and equipment.
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends and public holidays.
- Willingness to rotate between units when operationally required.
Added Advantage
Preference may be given to applicants with:
- 1–2 years’ experience in a hospital or healthcare food service environment.
- Knowledge of therapeutic diets.
- Experience in institutional kitchens, clinics, old age homes or catering services.
- Understanding of infection prevention and control procedures.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidates will:
- Prepare ingredients for daily meal production.
- Cook normal and therapeutic meals according to approved recipes.
- Portion and serve meals according to patients’ dietary prescriptions.
- Maintain cleanliness in kitchens, preparation rooms and food storage areas.
- Wash kitchen equipment and utensils.
- Receive, store and handle food safely.
- Follow infection prevention and food safety procedures.
- Ensure proper temperature control of food.
- Assist with stock handling where required.
- Report damaged equipment or food safety concerns.
- Comply with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
- Work closely with dieticians, supervisors and other hospital staff.
