Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • ABET Level 3 or minimum Grade 9/equivalent qualification, supported by an authentic school report.
  • No previous experience is required.
  • Food service industry exposure will be an advantage.
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices.
  • Understanding of Batho Pele principles in a food service environment.
  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends and public holidays.

Key Duties

The successful candidate will assist with:

  • Storage, preparation and cooking of food.
  • Dishing up and distributing meals and snacks to patients.
  • Preparing normal and therapeutic diets.
  • Following portion-control requirements and dietary allowances.
  • Packing meals onto delivery trolleys for distribution to wards.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in the food service unit.
  • Cleaning floors, utensils and equipment and ensuring proper waste segregation.
  • Wearing appropriate uniforms and protective clothing.
  • Operating and caring for food service equipment.
  • Reporting faulty equipment and safety risks.
  • Rotating between different areas of the food service unit.
  • Attending relevant food service training.
  • Supporting infection control, patient safety, Batho Pele and the Ideal Hospital Framework.
