Sasol is currently recruiting Artisan Grade 2 Diesel Mechanics (x8) for its Sasolburg & Natref Operations. This is a permanent technical role within one of South Africa’s leading energy and chemical companies, focused on high-performance engine maintenance and power generation support.

Purpose of the Role

The successful candidate will support electricity generation through the maintenance of 18 stationary marine-type internal combustion engines using natural gas as fuel. These engines are directly coupled to generators used for power production.

Work is performed according to planned outages and breakdown maintenance schedules, strictly following company safety and engineering standards.


Key Responsibilities

Engine Maintenance & Overhaul

  • Overhaul of Wärtsilä 20V34SG gas engines
  • Overhaul of Napier 347 marine turbo systems
  • Maintenance of piston and connecting rod assemblies
  • Servicing cylinder heads, turbochargers, and lube oil systems

Fault Finding & Repairs

  • Diagnose and repair engine mechanical faults
  • Troubleshoot gas and compressed air systems
  • Replace damaged or non-repairable components
  • Maintain engine flexible couplings

Operational Duties

  • Work within execution teams under maintenance supervision
  • Support emergency breakdown repairs and plant upsets
  • Operate safely around heavy machinery and lifting equipment
  • Use overhead cranes for heavy component handling

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • NQF Level 4 Occupational Trade Qualification:
    • Diesel Mechanic OR
    • Diesel Fitter OR
    • Earth Moving Mechanic
  • Red Seal certification is mandatory

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience
  • Background in:
    • Heavy construction equipment OR
    • Marine engines OR
    • Gas engine maintenance

Job Requirements & Conditions

  • Physically fit (able to lift up to 20 kg)
  • Valid Code B driver’s licence
  • Willingness to do standby duties
  • Occasional overtime during plant breakdowns or overhauls
  • Basic computer literacy (MS Office)
  • Knowledge of emergency and safety procedures
