The successful candidate will assist Train Drivers in the safe and efficient movement of freight and passenger trains while ensuring compliance with operational, safety, and railway regulations. Key Responsibilities

Locomotive Preparation

Assist with locomotive inspections and preparation before departure.
Check and supplement required operational equipment.
Assist with locomotive brake testing procedures.
Ensure locomotives are clean, safe, and ready for service.

Train Operations Support

Support Train Drivers during train movements and operations.
Assist with train departures and arrivals.
Monitor signals and communicate operational information.
Observe safe train running conditions throughout journeys.

Communication Equipment Management

Obtain and inspect radios, telemeters, handsets, and communication devices.
Verify functionality of all communication equipment before departure.

Train Inspection and Safety Checks

Conduct pre-trip inspections of locomotives and trains.
Complete vehicle lists and operational documentation.
Assist with brake tests and train examinations.
Ensure compliance with railway safety standards.

Shunting Operations

Perform shunting activities according to work orders.
Place and remove freight wagons as required.
Update train and vehicle records accurately.
Support siding and yard operations.

Emergency and Incident Support

Assist the Train Driver during operational incidents.
Protect trains and infrastructure during emergencies.
Report route deviations, faults, and incidents promptly.

Administrative Duties

Complete train journals and operational reports.
Submit required documentation after each shift.
Ensure accurate recording of operational activities.

Minimum Requirements

Education

Grade 12 (Matric)
Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science preferred

Physical and Medical Requirements

Minimum height of 1.6 metres
Good physical fitness
Good hearing and vision
Mental fitness suitable for safety-critical railway operations
Ability to lift and carry heavy objects
Willingness to undergo medical examinations and behavioural risk assessments

Age Requirement

Applicants must be at least 21 years old to qualify for future train driving and train control duties.

Training Requirements

Must successfully complete theoretical and practical Train Assistant training.
Must obtain Train Assistant certification.
Must be willing to undergo continuous training and assessments.
