About the Road Accident Fund

The Road Accident Fund’s mission is to provide timely and equitable assistance to people affected by motor vehicle accidents. The organisation provides appropriate social benefits aimed at offering financial relief and supporting the recovery of qualifying accident victims.

Purpose of the Internship

The RAF is committed to youth skills development and provides graduates with an opportunity to gain valuable work-based experience.

Successful interns will receive exposure to various areas of Medical Management, helping them develop practical knowledge of medical claims processes, healthcare administration, medical billing and managed healthcare principles.

Areas of Work-Based Exposure

Depending on operational requirements, interns may be exposed to:

Medical Management

  • Assisting with injury assessment administration.
  • Assisting with undertakings administration.
  • Drafting, issuing and activating undertakings.
  • Supporting caregiver management processes.
  • Assisting with administration related to medical claims.

Medical Bill Review

  • Reviewing medical invoices.
  • Processing supplier claims.
  • Assisting with past medical expense claims.
  • Assisting with future medical expense claims.
  • Checking claims against applicable requirements.

Medical Risk Management

  • Using medical tariffs during bill reviews.
  • Applying clinical codes where required.
  • Working with treatment protocols.
  • Helping ensure service providers comply with RAF rules and applicable tariffs.
  • Applying managed healthcare principles during the review process.

Exception Handling

  • Participating in the implementation of formal exception-handling processes.
  • Assisting with maintaining exception-handling procedures.
  • Updating relevant documentation regularly.
  • Identifying and escalating exceptions where necessary.

Stakeholder Management

  • Following up on outstanding queries.
  • Resolving stakeholder queries within prescribed turnaround times.
  • Communicating with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintaining professional relationships with stakeholders.

External Stakeholder Engagement Interns may also gain exposure to activities involving:

  • Road shows.
  • Families of claimants.
  • Medical service providers.
  • Direct claimants.
  • Other relevant external stakeholders.

Administration

  • Data capturing.
  • Filing.
  • Maintaining records.
  • General office administration.
  • Supporting claims administration processes.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 certificate.
  • NQF Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in Health Sciences, Medical Sciences or a related medical qualification.
  • Registration certificate with HPCSA, SANC, SAPC or another applicable regulatory body.
  • Certified copy of ID.
  • Certified academic transcript.
  • Updated CV.
  • Motivational letter.

Knowledge or experience in clinical coding, claims administration and managed healthcare will be an added advantage.

Important Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be unemployed graduates between 18 and 25 years old.

Applicants must also:

  • Not have previously worked in the field of Medical Management.
  • Not have previously served as an intern.
  • Apply for a maximum of 3 RAF positions.
  • Disclose any previous internship experience.
  • Be willing to undergo security vetting.

If an applicant previously served as an intern but failed to disclose this information, the RAF may disqualify the applicant if the information is subsequently discovered.
