The successful candidate will report directly to the Maintenance Manager and oversee all aspects of heavy maintenance operations, ensuring aircraft safety, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and timely maintenance delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Heavy Maintenance Operations
- Oversee daily Heavy Maintenance activities within the assigned operational scope.
- Ensure compliance with aviation safety regulations and quality standards.
- Coordinate maintenance schedules, manpower allocation, and task sequencing.
- Monitor maintenance progress and ensure milestone achievement.
Team Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise Heavy Maintenance crews and Crew Chiefs.
- Allocate work according to qualifications, certifications, and operational priorities.
- Provide technical mentorship and troubleshooting assistance.
- Monitor team performance and address operational challenges.
Aircraft Maintenance Coordination
- Manage maintenance induction processes and enabling works.
- Ensure aircraft access, tooling, staging, and maintenance readiness.
- Coordinate with Avionics Foreman and other stakeholders.
- Support on-time aircraft delivery and fleet availability.

Tooling, Materials & Documentation
- Ensure all tooling and equipment are available, serviceable, and correctly calibrated.
- Coordinate spares and material availability.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, task cards, references, and sign-offs.
- Monitor material shortages and escalate risks promptly.
Safety & Compliance
- Promote a strong safety culture within the maintenance environment.
- Enforce PPE compliance and safe work practices.
- Conduct toolbox talks and safety briefings.
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with SACAA regulations and approved procedures.
Reporting & Administration
- Provide operational reports to Maintenance Control Centre and Management.
- Compile monthly fleet status and personnel utilisation reports.
- Support budgeting, cost control, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Participate in weekly and monthly operational meetings.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build and maintain relationships with suppliers and operational stakeholders.
- Represent FlySafair during technical engagements when required.
- Provide expert technical advice and operational support.
Minimum Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- Grade 12 / Matric or equivalent.
- Mechanical Trade Test Certificate.
- Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME).
- SACAA A & C Licence on Boeing 737-800.
Advantageous Qualifications
- SACAA A & C Licence on Boeing 737-8 MAX.
Experience Requirements
Essential Experience
- Minimum 20 years of aviation maintenance experience.
- At least 5 years of ground run experience on the CFM56-7B engine.
- Minimum 3 years of people management experience.
- Previous experience as an Aviation Technician on Boeing 737-800 mechanical systems.
Advantageous Experience
- Experience on Boeing 737-8 MAX mechanical systems.
- Full Ground Run experience on CFM56-LEAP engines.
Additional Requirements
Candidates must:
- Be available for extended working hours when required.
- Be willing to work weekends and public holidays.
- Be available on short notice.
- Be willing to travel locally and internationally at short notice.
- Hold a valid South African passport.
