Job Purpose

The General Workers will provide manual and operational support within the Waste Management Section. Duties include maintaining cleanliness, assisting with waste disposal operations, removing refuse and litter, supporting landfill activities and carrying out other general tasks as instructed by supervisors.

General Worker Responsibilities

The successful candidates may be required to:

  • Perform litter control and general labour at waste disposal facilities.
  • Assist with the general upkeep and operation of the landfill.
  • Assist at the recycling centre when required.
  • Assist spotters with directing and controlling landfill traffic.
  • Assist customers and members of the public with waste disposal.
  • Remove metal and sharp objects to help prevent customer vehicle tyre damage.
  • Safely store equipment after completing duties.
  • Maintain and safely look after protective clothing used during work.
  • Clean and remove weeds from pavements.
  • Load and off-load materials and equipment when required.
  • Perform household refuse removal.
  • Sweep streets, sidewalks, taxi ranks and bus ranks.
  • Pick up litter along streets, main roads and public open spaces.
  • Remove building rubble from public places.
  • Empty public street and dustbins.
  • Clean rubbish around buildings, streets, taxi ranks, bus ranks and open spaces.
  • Clean municipal buildings and facilities.
  • Follow lawful instructions from supervisors.
  • Perform additional duties within the Waste Management Section as delegated.
  • Complete ad hoc tasks and other duties requested by management.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • Basic Literacy or Grade 10.
  • Grade 12 will be an added advantage.
  • Valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage.
  • Approximately 1 year of relevant experience in general work related to waste management within a local government authority.
  • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Applicants must be bilingual.
  • Ability to understand, follow and execute instructions.
  • Good physical health and the ability to perform physical/manual work.
  • Basic knowledge and practical skills relating to general physical work.
  • Must be hardworking and self-disciplined.

Salary and Benefits

The advertised salary is:

R166,392 – R182,280 per annum

The municipality also indicates a total package of R307,561 per annum, inclusive of all benefits.
