About the Position
The purpose of the Laboratory Assistant role is to support the laboratory in producing accurate, reliable and timely test results for internal stakeholders. The position plays an important role in ensuring that products meet required quality and food safety standards before being released to trade.
The successful candidate will work in a production and laboratory environment and must be comfortable working shifts, weekends and public holidays when required.
Requirements
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification.
- A tertiary qualification in Analytical Chemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology or Food Science will be advantageous.
- Basic computer literacy.
- Fluent in Business English.

Duties and Responsibilities
Sampling and Testing
The Laboratory Assistant will provide support with laboratory and production-related activities, including preparing equipment for repairs, cleaning equipment after repairs and assisting with moving heavy equipment where required.
Preparation of Reagents
Responsibilities will include:
- Preparing microbiological media daily.
- Assisting with the preparation of microbiological swabs.
- Preparing Milkoscan pilots weekly.
- Preparing chemicals and reagents weekly.
- Preparing Lactose daily according to production requirements.
Cleaning and Laboratory Standards
The successful candidate will help maintain a clean, organised and compliant laboratory environment. Duties include:
- Cleaning laboratory glassware.
- Ensuring Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) requirements are followed.
- Maintaining 5S standards in the assigned work area.
- Cleaning water baths on a weekly basis.
- Keeping the laboratory and assigned work areas in an appropriate condition.
Administration and Record Keeping
The role also includes administrative and record-keeping responsibilities such as:
- Managing laboratory inventory.
- Maintaining records of Certificates of Analysis (COAs).
- Maintaining Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs).
- Updating product reports when required.
- Ensuring relevant laboratory documentation is properly maintained.
