Job Purpose
The purpose of the Donor Care Officer position is to collect quality and safe blood and blood products according to specific targets established for fixed and mobile blood drives.
The role also involves donor care, phlebotomy, donor assessment, documentation, blood drive preparation, stakeholder engagement, safety and compliance with SANBS policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Blood Collection and Donor Care
- Collect whole blood and/or apheresis units according to assigned targets.
- Prepare donors and equipment for phlebotomy.
- Perform phlebotomy according to applicable SANBS Standard Operating Procedures.
- Provide professional care, education and support to donors throughout the donation process.
- Conduct basic physical checks and record relevant donor information.
- Complete confidential donor risk assessments.
- Provide post-donation care and advice.
- Assist with emergency treatment, including First Aid and CPR, when required.
- Ensure correct blood collection volumes by preparing and monitoring blood packs using the appropriate equipment.
Donor Registration and Customer Service
- Welcome and assist donors at blood drives and donor centres.
- Guide donors through the registration process.
- Assist with completion of donor forms and address queries.
- Ensure donor documentation is complete and accurate.
- Manage donor complaints and escalate issues appropriately.
- Promote professional customer service and positive donor experiences.
- Educate donors regarding relevant health and high-risk behaviour considerations.
Blood Drive Operations
- Assist with packing and off-loading vehicles at blood drive venues.
- Help set up blood drives before donors arrive.
- Prepare and manage consumables according to blood drive targets.
- Monitor equipment and report maintenance requirements.
- Report discrepancies in stock deliveries and consumable usage.
- Assist with donor recruitment and booking activities.
Administration and Compliance
- Complete all required pre- and post-donation documentation.
- Maintain accurate donor records and relevant assessment documentation.
- Report irregularities to the Clinic Supervisor or designated deputy.
- Ensure medical waste is disposed of according to applicable procedures.
- Maintain a safe working environment and follow SHEQ requirements.
- Keep staff and equipment files updated.
- Comply with SANBS policies, procedures and operational standards.

Teamwork and Development

- Assist the Clinic Supervisor with identifying training needs.

Minimum Requirements
Education
- Diploma or Degree in General Nursing Sciences.
- Valid Code B or EB manual driver’s licence.
Experience
- At least 2 years’ experience as a Registered Professional Nurse.
Knowledge
