Key Purpose of the Role

The Clinical Coordinator will work closely with Clinical and Administration teams within the international operations environment to ensure activities are aligned with client service-level objectives.

The role involves managing pre-authorisation and medical assistance requests for international health insurance members and coordinating with clients, service providers, contact centres and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate may be responsible for:

  • Aligning clinical activities with the strategic objectives of the business.
  • Working with team members and stakeholders to meet client SLA requirements.
  • Managing activities from pre-authorisation and case coordination through clinical review and discharge planning.
  • Supporting chronic disease management and repatriation processes where required.
  • Working shifts according to operational requirements.
  • Answering ACD calls within the required service-level targets.
  • Managing average call duration within the required timeframe.
  • Receiving pre-authorisation requests by telephone, email or fax.
  • Verifying membership validity.
  • Checking available benefits against scheme and insurer benefit rules.
  • Assessing medical necessity and appropriateness of treatment.
  • Evaluating the suitability of healthcare facilities, service providers and levels of care.
  • Consulting Clinical Managers or Medical Advisors when necessary.
  • Approving or declining requests and communicating decisions appropriately.
  • Updating cases using utilisation reviews and clinical information received from hospitals.
  • Managing daily tasks, mailboxes and pending-status reports.
  • Liaising with scheme contacts regarding funding decisions.
  • Providing detailed feedback to clients and management within prescribed SLA periods.
  • Coordinating on-site or telephonic case-management visits when required.
  • Monitoring levels of care and utilisation.
  • Supporting discharge planning and negotiations with hospital administrators and treating specialists.
  • Liaising with clients and healthcare service providers.
  • Participating in delegated projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should have:

  • Grade 12 as a minimum educational requirement.
  • A relevant clinical qualification such as:
    • Ambulance Emergency Assistance (ILS)
    • Emergency Care Technician
    • Critical Care Assistance

Experience Requirements

The following experience is required or advantageous:

  • Relevant clinical experience.
  • Approximately 2 years’ pre-hospital road operations experience.
  • Two years’ call-centre experience is advantageous.
  • Hospital-based clinical experience is advantageous.
  • Aeromedical knowledge is advantageous.
  • Experience in healthcare insurance risk management.
  • Experience within the healthcare insurance environment.
  • Knowledge of risk-management principles is advantageous.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving, high-pressure environment.
