About the Role
The Trainee Shed Assistant supports the Shedman with locomotive shunting operations within the locomotive yard. The role focuses on ensuring locomotives are safely prepared, fuelled, inspected, and moved while maintaining high safety and operational standards.
Successful applicants will undergo both theoretical and practical training before being certified to work independently.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with locomotive shunting movements.
- Prepare and allocate locomotives for train operations.
- Fuel diesel locomotives with diesel and sand.
- Couple and uncouple locomotives safely.
- Operate railway points during shunting.
- Apply hand brakes and secure parked locomotives.
- Test auxiliary locomotive equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness within the locomotive yard.
- Identify and report unsafe working conditions.
- Follow Transnet safety procedures and railway operating rules.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 10 qualification or
- Six years’ experience in an operations environment.
- Willingness to complete Shed Assistant training.
- Ability to pass medical examinations and behavioural risk assessments.
- Good physical fitness, hearing, vision and mental health.
- Willingness to work shifts.
Knowledge and Skills
Suitable candidates should demonstrate:
- Knowledge of railway yards and shunting procedures.
- Basic understanding of locomotives and brake systems.
- Good communication and English literacy.
- Planning and organisational skills.
- Numerical ability.
