Donor Care Officer Duties and Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be responsible for:
Blood Collection and Donor Care
- Collecting whole blood and apheresis donations according to SANBS standards.
- Preparing blood collection equipment and donation areas.
- Performing donor assessments and health screenings.
- Conducting confidential donor interviews and risk assessments.
- Monitoring donors throughout the donation process.
- Providing post-donation care, advice, and refreshments.
- Ensuring donor safety and comfort at all times.
Clinical and Nursing Functions
- Conducting physical health checks before donation.
- Recording donor information accurately.
- Performing phlebotomy procedures according to standard operating procedures.
- Responding to donor reactions and medical emergencies.
- Administering first aid and CPR when necessary.

Customer Service and Stakeholder Relations
- Welcoming and assisting donors professionally.
- Educating donors about blood donation and healthy practices.
- Handling donor queries and concerns effectively.
- Promoting a positive donor experience.
- Building relationships with stakeholders at blood drives and donor centres.
Operational Support
- Assisting with blood drive setup and breakdown.
- Managing consumables and stock requirements.
- Monitoring equipment functionality and maintenance.
- Supporting recruitment and retention of blood donors.
- Ensuring collection targets are achieved.
Governance and Compliance
- Following SANBS quality assurance standards.
- Maintaining health and safety requirements.
- Managing medical waste according to regulations.
- Ensuring compliance with all SANBS policies and procedures.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in General Nursing Sciences.
- Registered Professional Nurse qualification.
- Valid Code B or EB Manual Driver’s Licence.
Experience
- At least 2 years of Registered Professional Nursing experience.
Knowledge and Competencies
- Knowledge of SANBS policies and procedures.
- Understanding of blood transfusion standards in South Africa.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong attention to detail and record-keeping abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet collection targets.
