Purpose of the Position

The Peer Educator will conduct outreach activities within the MSM community, provide accurate health information, mobilise community members to access mobile health services, and facilitate linkage to care.

The successful candidate will also provide peer support to patients who are already receiving HIV treatment and those starting their treatment journey. The role includes telephonic support, follow-ups, tracing patients who have interrupted treatment, and supporting the re-engagement of patients in care.

The Peer Educator will also provide education, psychosocial support, counselling, mentoring, and information about treatment and healthcare services to improve treatment adherence and retention in care.

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric / Grade 12
  • Candidates should come from the MSM community
  • Basic understanding of HIV testing and/or counselling
  • Experience working with community structures in HIV education and mobilisation
  • At least 1 year of experience providing support and/or counselling to people living with HIV
  • Experience dealing with psychosocial issues that influence health-seeking behaviour

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Client Engagement Officers to identify patients requiring support.
  • Provide clear, relevant, and age-appropriate HIV and TB information to service users.
  • Register and maintain accurate patient information on ART data collection registers and relevant tools.
  • Work closely with community-based organisations supporting patients.
  • Coordinate referrals to clinics and community-based HIV care and treatment services.
  • Advocate for accessible HIV and healthcare services.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work with tracers and community-based services to locate patients who have missed appointments or are lost to follow-up.
  • Record and report data collected during field activities.
  • Prepare routine reports and correspondence.
  • Provide support to participants in decanting programmes.
  • Provide psychosocial support, counselling, and mentoring to promote treatment adherence and retention in care.
  • Conduct place-based outreach using micro-planning methodologies.
  • Engage with people who use drugs (PWUD), their partners, and relevant stakeholders in the area.
  • Distribute HIV prevention commodities, including condoms and lubricants, to MSM.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Line Manager.
