The City of Johannesburg (CoJ), Social Development Department has announced student internship opportunities for qualifying students who are residents of Johannesburg.

The internships provide an opportunity for graduates to gain practical workplace experience while supporting important municipal social development and agricultural programmes.

Internship Opportunities Available

1. Internship: Food Value Chain

Department: Social Development
Branch: Food Resilience Unit
Location: Traduna Building, Johannesburg
Duration: Not exceeding 18 months
Stipend: R10,109.86 per month
Benefits: No benefits
Closing Date: Thursday, 20 August 2026

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12/NQF Level 4.
  • A Degree or Diploma in Agriculture Studies, Development Studies or an equivalent qualification.
  • A completed qualification with a minimum of 360 credits.
  • Applicants must be residents of the City of Johannesburg.

What You Will Do

The intern will assist with programmes involving agricultural production, food processing, food quality, food safety and agricultural value addition.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting activities designed to increase smallholder agricultural production.
  • Helping establish market linkages for emerging farmers.
  • Identifying food and agricultural value-chain opportunities within Johannesburg.
  • Implementing food value-chain plans that support farmers.
  • Coordinating with local partners and stakeholders.
  • Supporting agricultural market days in different regions.
  • Managing relationships with farmers and agro-processors.
  • Providing administrative support to programmes.
  • Assisting with training initiatives.
  • Supporting compliance with SABS standards.
  • Assisting with HACCP certification compliance.

Candidates should have knowledge or skills in:

  • Marketing.

  • Conflict management.
  • Project management.
  • Monitoring and evaluation.

2. Internship: Women and Elderly

Department: Social Development
Branch: Targeted Beneficiaries Unit
Location: Traduna Building, Johannesburg
Duration: Not exceeding 18 months
Stipend: R10,109.86 per month
Benefits: No benefits
Closing Date: Thursday, 20 August 2026

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12/NQF Level 4.
  • A BA Social Sciences Degree, BA Developmental Studies Degree, or BA Degree in Gender Studies at NQF Level 7.
  • Applicants must be City of Johannesburg residents.

Key Responsibilities

The successful intern will assist with the implementation and coordination of programmes focused on women and elderly beneficiaries.

Duties include:

  • Planning and managing Women and Elderly programmes and projects.
  • Providing general support to managers.
  • Assisting with unit productivity and administrative functions.
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Networking and coordinating stakeholders to support integrated service delivery.
  • Supporting programme and project implementation.
  • Assisting with budget planning.
  • Supporting implementation in accordance with the Social Development business plan.
  • Working within relevant City of Johannesburg financial policies and procedures.
  • Supporting compliance with the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).

Skills and Competencies

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Computer literacy, particularly MS Office.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Presentation skills.
  • Project management skills.
  • Leadership ability.
  • Knowledge of Women and Elderly programmes.
  • Understanding of local government policies and procedures.

A particularly important requirement is that applicants must be residents of the City of Johannesburg. Applicants from outside the City of Johannesburg will not be considered.
