About the Role

As a Donor Care Officer, you will collect safe, high-quality blood and blood products while delivering excellent care to blood donors. You will support both fixed donor centres and mobile blood drives, ensuring all collections comply with SANBS standards and healthcare regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Financial & Operations

  • Prepare and manage blood collection consumables.
  • Monitor equipment and report maintenance needs.
  • Track consumable usage and stock discrepancies.

Donor Care & Customer Service

  • Welcome and assist donors throughout the donation process.
  • Guide donors through registration and documentation.
  • Conduct donor education and provide post-donation care.
  • Resolve donor queries and maintain excellent customer service.

Blood Collection

  • Perform donor assessments and physical health checks.
  • Conduct confidential donor interviews.
  • Perform phlebotomy according to SANBS procedures.
  • Collect whole blood and specialised blood products safely.
  • Respond to donor emergencies using First Aid and CPR when required.

Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure compliance with SANBS policies and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records and donor documentation.
  • Manage medical waste safely.
  • Promote workplace health, safety and quality standards.

Team Support

  • Assist the Clinic Supervisor when required.
  • Participate in staff meetings and ongoing professional development.
  • Support staff training and competency assessments.

Minimum Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in General Nursing Sciences.
  • Registered Professional Nurse qualification.
  • Code B or EB Manual driver’s licence.
  • Minimum 2 years’ Registered Professional Nursing experience.
  • Knowledge of SANBS policies and blood transfusion standards in South Africa.
