The Road Accident Fund (RAF) is a South African public entity responsible for providing compensation and support to people injured in motor vehicle accidents or to their dependants. Through its internship programme, RAF aims to equip graduates with practical workplace experience while developing future legal professionals.

Internship Overview

The Litigation & Mediation Internship is designed for unemployed graduates seeking practical exposure in litigation, dispute resolution, court procedures and legal administration. During the 18-month programme, interns will work alongside experienced legal practitioners and State Attorneys while developing professional skills in a real legal environment.

The programme combines structured workplace learning, mentoring and professional development to prepare graduates for careers in the legal sector.

Key Responsibilities

Interns may be involved in:

  • Providing administrative and legal support.
  • Drafting legal correspondence, pleadings, affidavits, notices and applications.
  • Applying court rules in litigation matters.
  • Assisting State Attorneys during court proceedings.
  • Supporting litigation and alternative dispute resolution processes.
  • Filing court notices and legal documents.
  • Serving documents on Plaintiff Attorneys.
  • Monitoring court judgments and reporting outcomes.
  • Preparing Bills of Costs and taxation documentation.
  • Assisting with opposed taxation matters.
  • Preparing files for appearances before the Taxing Master.
  • Updating Litigation Management Systems.
  • Maintaining Caselines profiles (Pretoria/Johannesburg where applicable).
  • Attending legal development programmes such as LEAD and LexisNexis training.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB), BA Law or BCom Law qualification.
  • South African ID.
  • Academic transcript (mandatory).
  • Updated CV.
  • Motivational letter.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens.
  • Be between 18 and 25 years of age.
  • Be unemployed.
  • Never have been employed in the Legal/Law field.
  • Never have participated in a Legal/Law internship.
  • Never have served as an intern previously.
  • Apply for a maximum of three RAF internship vacancies.
  • Successfully complete the RAF security vetting process if shortlisted.

Failure to disclose previous internship experience may result in disqualification.
