Purpose of the Role

The Fund Accountant is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records by performing investment accounting, reconciliations, financial reporting, journal processing, and statutory reporting. The successful candidate will help maintain strong financial controls while supporting retirement fund operations and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor investment assets held by asset managers against liability balances.
  • Investigate and resolve reconciliation variances.
  • Perform daily bank reconciliations.
  • Match asset and bank transactions with administration system trade instructions.
  • Maintain accurate general ledger accounts.
  • Prepare monthly investment fund reconciliation packs.
  • Compile quarterly management and board financial reports.
  • Prepare statutory returns including exchange control reporting.
  • Perform peer reviews of reconciliations where required.
  • Prepare balance sheet reconciliations and clear reconciling items.
  • Process accurate month-end and year-end journals.
  • Produce annual financial statements for Pension and Provident Funds.
  • Prepare audit working papers and support external and internal audits.
  • Maintain strong financial controls and identify process improvements.
  • Test, document and implement control enhancements.
  • Prepare and monitor PAYE reconciliations and resolve outstanding items.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.

Minimum Requirements

  • Accounting Diploma, Advanced Diploma or BCom Degree in Accounting (NQF Level 7).
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar accounting or fund accounting role.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience within the financial services sector.
  • Excellent analytical, numerical and problem-solving skills.

Advantageous Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience in the South African Retirement (Pension/Provident) Fund industry.
  • Experience preparing annual financial statements.
  • Knowledge of statutory reporting requirements.
  • Exposure to investment accounting and fund administration.
  • Experience working with auditors and regulatory reporting.
