Job Purpose

The Teller is responsible for processing customer transactions accurately, securely, and efficiently while maintaining excellent customer service standards. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with banking regulations, prevent fraud, assist customers with banking enquiries, and promote Absa’s products and digital banking services.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Cash Handling

  • Process customer deposits and withdrawals.
  • Receive and pay out cash accurately.
  • Process cheque deposits and cheque encashments.
  • Handle drafts, traveller’s cheques, and other financial instruments.
  • Count cash carefully using approved counting equipment.
  • Balance and reconcile your cash drawer throughout the day.
  • Prepare daily reconciliation reports.
  • Request cash replenishment when required.
  • Return excess cash according to branch procedures.

Customer Service

  • Deliver fast, professional, and friendly service.
  • Assist customers with banking enquiries.
  • Explain banking procedures and documentation requirements.
  • Help customers complete deposit and withdrawal slips correctly.
  • Educate customers on self-service banking options.
  • Promote Internet Banking, ATMs, and digital channels.
  • Provide updates on customer enquiries.
  • Escalate unresolved issues where necessary.
  • Maintain a neat, organised, and professional workstation.

Sales Support

  • Identify customer banking needs.
  • Generate quality sales leads.
  • Refer customers to Sales Consultants.
  • Promote Absa banking products and campaigns.
  • Encourage customers to use digital banking services.
  • Support the branch in achieving sales targets.

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Verify customer identity before processing transactions.
  • Follow all anti-money laundering (AML) procedures.
  • Detect and report suspicious or fraudulent transactions.
  • Comply with South African Reserve Bank (SARB) requirements.
  • Safeguard cash, keys, teller stamps, and security devices.
  • Follow branch opening and closing procedures.
  • Complete all required registers accurately.
  • Adhere to fraud prevention policies.
  • Ensure compliance with internal banking procedures and transaction limits.
  • Participate in regular cash counts and audits.

Daily Operational Responsibilities

  • Open and close the teller workstation according to procedures.
  • Maintain accurate transaction records.
  • Read operational updates, circulars, and fraud alerts.
  • Ensure banking equipment is functioning correctly.
  • Report faults on teller equipment promptly.
  • Complete end-of-day balancing and reconciliation.
  • Ensure all transactions are authorised correctly.

Minimum Requirements

  • Further Education and Training Certificate (FETC) in Business, Commerce and Management Studies.
  • Previous banking or customer service experience will be an advantage.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Good numerical ability.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
