Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have an appropriate recognised academic qualification, including:

  • Senior Certificate (Matric)
  • National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  • National Senior Certificate Vocational (NCV)

Applicants must fall into one of the following categories:

  • Currently registered students at tertiary institutions
  • Unemployed persons with one or more tertiary qualifications
  • Unemployed graduates

Applicants must also:

  • Have advanced numerical skills.
  • Have Mathematics or Accounting as a compulsory subject.
  • Applicants in their second year or above at tertiary level will be advantaged.
  • Indicate any previous experience in examination administration, particularly as an Examination Assistant at a marking centre or office-based environment.
  • Be able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

Examination Assistant

The successful candidates may be responsible for:

  • Receiving, checking, controlling, scanning and packing examination scripts for marking.
  • Ensuring the correct number of scripts and marksheets are received for each batch, subject, paper and examination session.
  • Identifying and addressing discrepancies in script batches.
  • Ensuring bags contain the required MP flow control lists.
  • Ensuring bags are correctly tagged with the appropriate marking venue colour-coded label.
  • Creating marking centre files for scripts dispatched to marking venues.
  • Assisting with the dispatch of scripts to marking centres.
  • Receiving, controlling and archiving marked scripts at Head Office.
  • Maintaining accurate records to allow scripts to be retrieved when required.

Quality Assurer

Quality Assurers may be responsible for:

  • Receiving, controlling and distributing scripts to marking teams.
  • Ensuring the correct number of scripts and marksheets are maintained during marking.
  • Assisting with the control, distribution and scanning of scripts.
  • Checking that all questions have been marked.
  • Checking that marks have been correctly added.
  • Ensuring totals are correctly transferred to the front cover of scripts.
  • Checking that totals on scripts correspond with marksheets.
  • Identifying discrepancies and ensuring corrections are made by marking teams.
  • Reconciling and controlling scripts after marking.
  • Arranging scripts by subject and paper in numerical order for indexed archival.

Important Exclusions

The department has specifically stated that the following persons may not apply and will not be considered:

  • Persons writing the 2026 National Senior Certificate examinations
  • Persons writing the 2026 Senior Certificate examinations
  • Persons writing the 2026 AET examinations
  • Persons who have taken the VSP
  • Persons currently employed elsewhere

Criteria Questions

Applicants will be required to answer questions including:

  1. Have you passed Matric or an equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification?
  2. Are you currently registered as a tertiary student?
  3. What is your current or highest year of study at tertiary level?
  4. Have you passed Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy at Matric or tertiary level?
  5. Have you passed Accounting at Matric or tertiary level?
  6. How many years’ experience do you have as an Examination Assistant/Quality Assurer?
