Position Purpose

The Database Administrator will be responsible for ensuring the performance, integrity, availability and security of Transnet Engineering’s databases.

The successful candidate will design, implement and maintain database systems, troubleshoot technical issues, optimize database performance and collaborate with development and information security teams.

The role will also contribute to database automation, cost optimization, data governance, compliance and the continued improvement of the organization’s data infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Designing, implementing and maintaining database schemas, tables, stored procedures and functions.
• Working with software development teams on database design and implementation.
• Enforcing database standards, naming conventions and best practices.
• Managing the full database lifecycle, including provisioning, upgrades, migrations and decommissioning.
• Planning and executing database upgrades, patches and migrations with minimal disruption.
• Developing automation scripts using PowerShell, Python and SQL.
• Implementing database monitoring and alerting systems.
• Monitoring database performance and availability and responding to incidents.
• Optimizing SQL queries, indexing strategies and database configurations.
• Developing, testing and improving backup and recovery strategies.
• Leading regular disaster recovery drills.
• Implementing database security policies, access controls, authentication and authorization.
• Protecting sensitive information through encryption, masking and redaction.
• Conducting security audits and vulnerability assessments.
• Applying relevant database security patches.
• Monitoring database growth and planning future capacity requirements.
• Ensuring adequate storage and computing resources.
• Supporting development teams with database design reviews and SQL query optimization.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should meet one of the following requirements:

Option 1

• A minimum 3-year National Diploma in an ICT-related qualification.
• At least 5 years’ experience in an ICT environment as a Database Administrator.
• At least 1 year of experience in a Supervisory or Specialist role.

OR

Option 2

• At least 6 years’ experience in an ICT environment as a Database Administrator.
• At least 2 years’ experience in a Supervisory or Specialist role.
