About the Role

The Trainee Train Assistant will assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of trains and locomotives. The role focuses on ensuring freight and cargo are transported safely, efficiently, and on time while complying with railway safety regulations and operational standards.

Successful candidates will receive both theoretical and practical training to become certified Train Assistants capable of working independently.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with locomotive preparation and brake testing
  • Performing train inspections before departure
  • Handling communication equipment such as radios and telemeters
  • Supporting train shunting operations in sidings and stations
  • Assisting the Train Driver during trips and emergencies
  • Monitoring signals and train movement for safety compliance
  • Completing train journals and administrative documentation
  • Ensuring adherence to Transnet safety procedures and railway regulations

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Educational Requirements

  • Grade 12 certificate
  • Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Minimum height requirement of 1.6m
  • Physically and mentally fit
