About the Role

The Donor Care Officer will be responsible for collecting quality blood donations while maintaining SANBS standards, donor safety, and operational efficiency. The role also involves stakeholder engagement, donor education, medical assessments, phlebotomy procedures, and emergency care support during blood drives.

This opportunity suits experienced professional nurses who enjoy working with people, travelling to blood drive locations, and contributing to healthcare services across South Africa.

Key Responsibilities

Financial & Operational Management

  • Manage consumables and blood collection equipment efficiently
  • Monitor stock usage and report discrepancies
  • Ensure blood drive targets are achieved

Donor Care & Customer Service

  • Welcome and assist donors during registration
  • Help donors complete required forms
  • Educate donors about blood donation and high-risk behaviour
  • Address complaints and improve donor satisfaction

Blood Collection & Clinical Duties

  • Perform donor assessments and physical checks
  • Conduct confidential donor interviews
  • Carry out phlebotomy procedures according to SANBS SOPs
  • Provide post-donation care and refreshments
  • Assist during emergencies using First Aid and CPR procedures

Team Support & Compliance

  • Support Clinic Supervisor responsibilities when required
  • Participate in staff training and meetings
  • Ensure compliance with SANBS operational and safety policies
  • Manage medical waste according to healthcare regulations

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Diploma or Degree in General Nursing Sciences
  • Valid Code B or EB Manual Driver’s License

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years’ Registered Professional Nursing experience

Knowledge & Skills

  • Understanding of SANBS policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of blood transfusion standards in South Africa
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work under pressure in mobile clinic environments
