About the Role

The General Laboratory Assistant plays an important role in supporting blood bank operations. The successful candidate will assist with blood hamper preparation, laboratory cleaning, waste disposal, stock handling, and maintaining safety standards according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Key Responsibilities

Blood Hamper Preparation & Stock Management

  • Prepare and collect blood hampers according to schedules and SOPs
  • Collect unused and empty blood hampers from wards and designated areas
  • Check hampers for broken seals and report issues to supervisors
  • Pack blood and blood products into fridges, freezers, and platelet agitators
  • Conduct daily stock counts and arrange stock according to expiry dates

Medical Waste Disposal

  • Handle bio-hazardous waste disposal according to safety procedures
  • Prepare waste tracking and transportation documents
  • Scan and track waste containers using the CS Tracker system
  • Collect and discard outdated samples
  • Coordinate waste removal with approved disposal companies

Laboratory Cleaning & Support Duties

  • Prepare disinfectant solutions for laboratory use
  • Clean and decontaminate laboratory equipment and work areas
  • Assist with blood spill clean-ups
  • Defrost and clean laboratory refrigerators and freezers
  • Replenish laboratory supplies such as test tubes

SHEQ Compliance

  • Follow all Safety, Health, Environmental, and Quality procedures
  • Assist in resolving laboratory non-conformances and deviations
  • Ensure compliance with SOPs and workplace safety standards

General Duties

  • Support supervisors and senior staff with additional laboratory tasks
  • Complete the Laboratory Assistants training course within the required timeframe

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • Mathematics
  • One Science subject

Experience

  • No previous experience required

Skills & Competencies

  • Basic computer literacy
  • Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a healthcare laboratory environment
