Role Purpose

To complete the registration of chronic conditions and treatments and provide support to DUR Pharmacists, ensuring effective, compliant, and cost-efficient medication management.


Minimum Requirements

  • Matric (Essential)
  • Pharmacist Assistant Basic qualification (Essential)
  • Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council as a Pharmacist Assistant (Essential)
  • Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification or Pharmacy Technician Certificate (Advantageous)
  • Membership with the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA) (Advantageous)
  • Minimum 2–3 years’ experience as a Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant in a retail pharmacy or private hospital
  • Experience in prescription processing and dispensing under pharmacist supervision
  • Experience interacting professionally with members, pharmacists, and doctors (in-person and telephonic)

Experience & Knowledge

  • Chronic condition management and DUR experience (Advantageous)
  • Managed care and/or call centre experience (Advantageous)
  • Strong clinical knowledge of:
    • Medicine trade names, generics, and usage
    • Drug classes and indications
    • ICD-10 codes
    • South African Pharmacy Law and Good Pharmacy Practice
    • Physiology, disease conditions, drug interactions, and prescription validity
  • Understanding of the medical aid industry, clinical guidelines, and policies
  • Computer literacy and ability to navigate systems effectively

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Process & Clinical Management

  • Register chronic conditions and treatments according to clinical guidelines
  • Authorise or decline medicine and diagnoses in line with scheme rules and clinical policies
  • Manage medication benefits to ensure cost-effective treatment outcomes
  • Maintain a 24-hour turnaround time on correspondence and authorisations
  • Identify and escalate complex cases to DUR Pharmacists or management
  • Identify compliance risks and investigate non-disclosure of pre-existing conditions
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of clinical guidelines
  • Support oncology, maternity authorisations, and claims reviews

Client & Patient Advocacy

  • Deliver professional, first-time resolution of member and provider queries
  • Promote patient advocacy through guidance on generics, alternatives, DSPs, and lifestyle compliance
  • Provide expert advice to clients and internal stakeholders
  • Ensure service delivery in line with Service Level Agreements (SLAs)

People & Collaboration

  • Build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Support other teams with claims management and clinical expertise
  • Participate in change management and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Take ownership of professional and personal development

Financial Responsibility

  • Contribute to financial planning and risk management processes
  • Identify opportunities to improve cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency
