The (UIF) is offering a 12-month ITR Learnership Programme under the UIF Labour Activation Programme (LAP).

This opportunity provides unemployed South Africans with practical workplace experience and a recognised qualification.

About the UIF

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) provides short-term financial relief to workers who become unemployed or are unable to work due to:

  • Maternity leave
  • Adoption leave
  • Parental leave
  • Illness
  • Death (benefits paid to dependants)

Who Contributes to UIF?

All employees and employers must contribute to UIF, except if the employee:

  • Works less than 24 hours per month
  • Is employed in national or provincial government
  • Holds certain public office positions (e.g., Members of Parliament, Premiers, MECs, municipal councillors, traditional leaders)

Employer Registration Requirements

Employers registered for Employees’ Tax with (SARS) must also register for UIF contributions.

Employers must register at the UIF Commissioner’s office if they:

  • Are not required to register with SARS for Employees’ Tax
  • Have not voluntarily registered with SARS
  • Are not liable for the Skills Development Levy
  • Pay remuneration to employees

All liable employers must contribute monthly to the UIF.
