Overview

The South African National Blood Service (South African National Blood Service) is seeking a qualified and dedicated Donor Care Officer to join its Bethlehem team. The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting safe, high-quality blood and blood products while ensuring excellent donor care, compliance with healthcare standards, and achievement of blood collection targets.

This role is ideal for a registered professional nurse who is passionate about patient care, blood donation services, and community healthcare.

Key Responsibilities

Blood Collection & Donor Care

  • Collect whole blood and specialized blood products according to operational targets.
  • Perform donor registration, screening, assessments, and documentation.
  • Conduct confidential donor interviews and risk assessments.
  • Carry out phlebotomy procedures in accordance with SANBS standards.
  • Monitor donors throughout the donation process and provide post-donation care.
  • Educate donors on blood donation procedures and health-related matters.
  • Respond to medical emergencies by providing First Aid and CPR when required.

Customer Service & Stakeholder Relations

  • Welcome and assist donors during blood drives and donor centre visits.
  • Resolve donor queries and escalate complaints appropriately.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and donor support.
  • Maintain positive relationships with stakeholders and community partners.

Operational Support

  • Assist with setting up and dismantling blood drive venues.
  • Manage consumables and report stock discrepancies.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained and functioning correctly.
  • Support donor recruitment and booking initiatives.

Compliance & Governance

  • Follow SANBS policies, procedures, and blood transfusion standards.
  • Ensure proper disposal of medical waste.
  • Maintain health, safety, and quality assurance standards.
  • Keep staff and equipment records up to date.

Leadership & Development

  • Perform Clinic Supervisor duties when required.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities.
  • Support competency assessments and training initiatives within the clinic team.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in General Nursing Sciences.
  • Registered Professional Nurse qualification.
  • Valid Code B or EB Manual Driver’s Licence.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a Registered Professional Nurse.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of SANBS policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of blood transfusion standards in South Africa.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service orientation.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Attention to detail and compliance-driven mindset.
  • First Aid and emergency response capability.
